BLESSED.. Notice how the Psalm opens with a promise – the original word in Hebrew being plural, suggests that there are countless blessings for anyone who follows these instructions.
Here the gracious man is described both negatively (see verse 1) and positively (see verse 2).
First, he is a man “who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked”. By heeding wise counsel and faithfully walking in the Lord’s commandments, his footsteps are ordered by God’s Word, and not the deceptive and malicious schemes of the unrighteous. It is a rich sign of spiritual growth when our outward behavior changes, and when ungodliness is banished from our actions.
Notice next, “Nor stand in the path of sinners”. He deliberately chooses to surround himself with godly company. Although he himself was a sinner, through the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus, he has been quickened by the Holy Spirit and his heart is renewed. Guided by the grace of God, he refuses to join the crowds that do evil and instead stands with the righteous in their congregation.
He has taken the words, “Nor sit in the seat of the scoffers” to heart. He finds no solace in the atheist’s scoffing. Let others mock sin, eternity, hell, heaven, and the Eternal God; this man has learned a wiser philosophy than that of the infidel, and has too much reverence for God’s presence to tolerate hearing His name blasphemed.
We must beware of the “deceitfulness of sin” and its slow progression. – Hebrews 3:13
He WALKS not in the counsel of the ungodly
Nor STANDS in the path of sinners
Nor SITS in the seat of the scoffers
Those who continually engage in sinful behavior will become worse over time, eventually leading to a complete disregard for God’s instructions. The progression is described as beginning with poor choices and associations, then progressing to actively engaging in evil, and then influencing others to do the same. The end result will be a life of mocking God’s teachings and disobeying His laws.
Those who follow the Lord are like a sailor navigating through a stormy sea. He steers clear of treacherous reefs, avoiding the rocks of evil and the waves of doubt. Instead, he charts his course by the lighthouse of the Lord, using its beacon of truth and his faith to guide him safely home.
